| Re : How to learn english? Yeah, Mimouna, you're totally right. I had a couple of problems trying to speak english to some japaneese folks. I guess the problem of our difficulty to communicate verbally in english is that we think in arabic or in french of what we wanna say and then we try to translate the ideas. This takes time and we end up with making bunch of mistakes, but with a bit of practice, yeah it may make it happen.

| Re : How to learn english? A thread like this one cannot stay unnoticed for a linguist (that’s me hi hi hi). Learning the basics (grammar, vocabulary...) in any foreign language does not necessarily imply acquiring a full mastery of the language especially when it comes to the oral skills (which come last in the learning process). Aiming at acquiring a native-like fluency and accent can be really difficult if not impossible for those learning outside the target language community. The best way to reach that level, is immersion which is a new teaching trend emphasising the importance of the linguistic environment. I had been learning English for three years when I went to England for the first time. And I was almost unable to utter a meaningful sound for the first two or three weeks. It was so frustrating. The language was there, the skills were there, the rules, the vocabulary, the grammar… everything was well organised and well stored in my head, but… it just could not come out of it!! It took me a few weeks to be comfortable speaking English with its natives and almost a year to have a near-native fluency and accent and be able to understand their idioms. Practice is the key concept. Of course, each person has his/her own pace and rhythm, some may be quicker than others. Books, films, songs, newspapers, TV… can really improve one’s language skills. For communication, live interaction is also needed. You may need to have the guts to start conversing in English (especially with natives) for the first times, but then everything comes naturally. And bleach, I can understand your Japanese experience. That’s not English they speak for god’s sake!! And worse, you have to pronounce like them to make sure they get what you mean (and that is a funny experience!).

| Re : How to learn english? Envoyé par Anoushka God Bless ya!
God bless Ya.... I mean having some 1m60 barely human people, don't see any nazi staff of what I said, speaking as if they were a band of Tony Blairs eating pop corn and yelling, is a a bit difficult to understand and to make them understand what you're saying, is a really hard work. I mean their voices are just like a constipated little baby's fart. For once, it could be. But trying to explain to them the history of the pharaohs, that's not very cool. Kanichiwa Rules....

| Re : How to learn english? I'd say that those who wanna improve their skills and who can't be bothered to read or speak, they can start by watching Movies in english subtitled, at first in French, for the vocab and to get used to the accent. PS: concerning the japs ... try speaking english to indians, to french for god's sake, to viets, to any asians actually ............. ARGHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh "Very good very good ......." For those who think that school is enough, hate to breake it to u ...; u r 100% wrong ! i personnaly learnt it when i was like 7 yrs old ........ if anyone needs any help ... don't hesitate !!
